It is very difficult for us to recover the lost password. If you lost the password for your Windows operating system which is used daily, the situation will be worse. With the help of an application called "chntpw" in the Parted Magic, you can change your lost Windows password.

Chntpw is a command line utility which will allow users to change the password of Windows XP/Vista/Windows 7. You can clear the administration password using this utility.

Follow these steps to change your Windows password.

1) First you have to download and install the Parted Magic software. You can check my article on How to install Parted Magic

2) To clear the password, first you have to mount the drive where Windows operating system is located.

3) For this you have to start the mounting tool. You can get it from Start → System Tools → Mount-gtk. Be carefull while mounting. You have to mount the drive where your Windows OS is situated.

4) Click on the LXTerminal shortcut toolbar to launch a terminal window.

5) In the terminal, type "chntpw /media/sda3/WINDOWS/system/config/SAM" and press enter key. (Here media/sda3 is the place where my Windows OS is mounted).

6) You will get a menu. In the menu, slect the option "Clear (blank) user password".

7) Now, you password will be cleared.

8) If you have been asked for "Write hive files?", type y and press the enter key.

That's it, Now your Windows Administrator password has been cleared.
