As far as the functionality of the URL reputation is concerned then it is exactly similar with Google Safe browsing API. It has one strong hand over Google browsing i.e. Superior results during information accessing. After testing websites, it picked 92 malware serving sites and came to conclusion it is difficult to maintain maximum of 30 percent safe browsing.

For more than 10 percent websites, this smart screen filter does not block malware activity. The main work of smart screen filter is to monitor the status of the downloaded files by assigning a certificate reputation to them. After justification of files, it passes those files which look good to it while on the other hand blocked all suspicious files which does not have genuine certificate. One question which comes to your mind is "How user come to know that particular file is suspicious?" , for this purpose a special warning is thrown by the system i.e. system does not recognize the certificate of downloaded file.

The provision for safe downloading of file is included in IE 9 such that you can download the suspicious file as well but you must be fully sure with the status of that downloaded file. Microsoft during testing has made a special database for such suspicious files and used the same in IE 9 so that when anyone during surfing interact with these files then smart screen immediately throws a warning. It also verifies web address such that when you misplaced any address then smart screen filter protects you against web vector. As we have seen many hackers are making use of wrong or incomplete web addresses for malware action in your system. Therefore, smart screen filter base protects you against URL action.

Microsoft has included plenty of defense in depth techniques like ASLR and DEP so as to prevent damage against vulnerabilities. Thus, we can say that Windows 8 smart screen filter cover everything about anti-malware product. It is only enabled for browser online activity but cannot work for USB drive transfer of data using off-line mode.
