In this article,i discussed about "Assigned License Error" in MS Exchange while using Office 365. Probable cause for the error is discussed with resolution for it. If we follow the procedure mentioned in the article, "Assigned License Error" can be rectified.
Error: "One or more users need an assigned license in order to retain an Exchange Online mailbox or archive."
When we successfully migrated user mailboxes from on-premise server to o365, sometimes we may get the above error for any single account although, we assigned licenses to all the migrated accounts including our account. The error continues to appear in the admin center also.If we notice, we will be unable to login into www.outlook.com with the particular account.
Cause: Usually when we see this error, it means that one or more users do not have a license of any kind assigned to them.
Resolution:
First we have to check the accounts that are created and didn't migrate. Once we locate the account with no license, we can proceed from there.
The reason why we can't log into www.outlook.com is because Office 365 login is yyy@mydomain.onmicrosoft.com or it is yyy@myvanitydomain.com. An Identity that we created within Office 365. We have outlook, built in as part of the service. We do not need to login to www.outlook.com for Office 365. The only way to log into www.outlook.com is with a windows live ID or a hotmail ID. If we have other live mail accounts then we can add them to our office 365 outlook application. Once logged into the account, simply go to the exchange manage page and add other mailboxes.
By following the procedure, we can avoid "Assigned License Error".
