In computer market, several operating systems were developed and running successful. Some of them are Ubuntu, Fedora, Chrome OS, iOS, webOS etc., Many of them are Linux derivatives. In this article, I have discussed webOS operating system, vfeatures of webOS, when was webOS acquired by HP, when webOS is going to place in the HP desktop and notebook computers etc. Also, I will compare webOS with Windows 8.

"When we think about an operating system, there is no other important company than Microsoft."

Now the reputation has been changed. Several operating systems were developed and running successful in the market. Some of them are Ubuntu, Fedora, Chrome OS, iOS, webOS etc., many of them are Linux derivate.

Recently, Microsoft getting tough competition from these three operating systems. They are Chrome OS, iOS and webOS. These are the three different operating systems from different organizations.

I tried to discuss about webOS operating system in detail.

Till now, webOS is not into PC market, but they are giving competition to Microsoft in mobile market.

webOS is a proprietary mobile operating system running on the Linux kernel, it was initially developed by Palm, which was later acquired by Hewlett-Packard.

webOS was introduced by Palm in January 2009 as the successor to Palm OS, and was widely acclaimed for its ease of use, integration of Web 2.0 technologies, open architecture and multitasking capabilities.

The first webOS device was the original Palm Pre, released on Sprint in June 2009. In 2010, HP acquired Palm. webOS was described as a key asset and motivation for the purchase.

In February 2011, HP announced several new devices that will use various versions of the webOS, including the HP Veer and HP Pre 3 smartphones, running webOS 2.2, and the HP TouchPad, a tablet computer which will run webOS 3.0, planned for release in Summer 2011.

In March 2011, HP announced plans for a version of webOS by the end of 2011 to run within the Microsoft Windows operating system, and to be installed on all HP desktop and notebook computers in 2012.

So in 2012, we can expect webOS in all HP desktop and notebook computers.

webOS's graphical user interface design was led by "Matias Duarte" for use on devices with touch screen. webOS uses multi touch gestures to navigate on the touch screen. webOS 1.4.5 does not natively include a virtual keyboard application as the devices include slide-out keyboards, but users can obtain virtual keyboards through patching.

The interface uses "cards" to manage multi tasking. Applications can be launched from either the "Launcher", which displays a default of three pages of application icons in scrollable grid or the Quick Launch bar, which displays five icons inline horizontally. The user switches between running applications by a flicking gesture from left and right on the screen.

one important feature of webOS is Synergy. webOS uses a feature Synergy, to integrate information from many sources. Users can sign in to accounts on Gmail, Yahoo, Facebook, Linkedin and Microsoft Out(via Exchange Active Sync) and integrate all these sources into a single list. Calendars from multiple sources can be viewed together or one at a time. For messaging, Synergy combines all conversations with each contact into a single chat-style window. For example, instant messages and SMS text messages are viewed together.

Another important feature of webOS is the web browser. The webOS web browser, simply named "Web" uses Webkit Layout Engine and accordingly renders pages in a similar way to other WebKit-based browsers such as Apple's Safari, Google's Google Chrome and Android browsers. The screen orientation switches between landscape or portrait displays on rotating the device.

Till now, webOS is a competitor in the mobile market. As per HP, they are going to place webOS in their HP devices later in the year 2012.

So, we can say in future webOS will be a sure Competitor for Microsoft Windows in their PC operating System too.
