Microsoft's Windows 8 operating system is getting competition from different other operating systems. These are the three operating systems which are going to give a tough competition to Windows 8: Chrome OS, iOS and WebOS. In this article, I will compare Windows 8 operating system wth iOS.

"When we think about an operating system, there is no other important company than Microsoft."

Now it has been changed. Several operating systems are developed and running successfully in the market. Some of them are Ubuntu, Fedora, Chrome OS, iOS, WebOS etc., many of them are Linux derivate.

Recently, Microsoft is getting tough competition from these three operating systems. They are Chrome OS, iOS and WebOS. These are the three different operating systems from different organizations.

In this article, I have tried to discuss about iOS operating system in detail.

Till now, iOS is not into PC operating system, they are one of the competitor's to Microsoft in mobile devices.

iOS is derived from Mac OS X, with which it shares the Darwin foundation, and is therefore a Unix-like operating system by nature.

iOS (known as iPhone OS prior to June 2010) is Apple's mobile operating system. Originally developed for the iPhone, it has since been extended to support other Apple devices such as the ipodtouch, iPad and Apple TV.

Apple does not license iOS for installation on third-party hardware. As per Apple, as of now, its App store contains more than 300,000 iOS applications, which have collectively been downloaded more than 10 billion times.

In the last quarter of 2010, Apple had a 16% share of the Smartphone operating system market. In terms of units sold, third behind Google's Android and Nokia's Symbian OS. As of May 2010 it accounted for 59% of mobile web consumption (not including the iPad) in North America

When we come to user interface of iOS, it is based on the concept of direct manipulation, using multi-touch gestures. Interface control elements consist of sliders, switches, and buttons. The response to user input is immediate and provides a fluid interface. Interaction with the OS includes gestures such as swipe, tap, pinch and reverse pinch. Internal accelerometers are used by some applications to respond to shaking the device or rotating it in three dimensions

In iOS, there are four abstraction layers: the Core OS layer, the Core Services layer, the Media layer, and the Cocoa Touch layer. The operating system uses roughly 500 megabytes of the device's storage, varying for each model

When we come to features of iOS, there are several exciting features. One of the important feature is Multitasking. Before iOS 4, multitasking as limited to a selection of the applications. Apple worried that running multiple third-party applications simultaneously would drain batteries too quickly. Starting with iOS 4, on 3rd-generation and newer iOS devices, multitasking is supported through seven background API'S. Some Multitasking features on iOS 4 are background audio, voice over IP, background location, push notifications, local notifications, task finishing and fast app switching

Another Important thing in iOS is Jailbreaking. iOS has been subject to a variety of different hacks centered on adding functionality not supported by Apple. Before the 2008 debut of the App Store, the primary reason for jailbreaking was to install third-party native applications. Apple said it would not design software updates specifically to break these native apps (other than applications that perform Sim-Unlocking), however with each iOS update the jailbreak appears to no longer work.

Since the arrival of the App store third-party applications, the focus of the jailbreaking community has shifted. A major focus of jailbreaking is allowing theming, using emulators and community-made tweaks like multitasking, Adobe Flash player, accessing the iPhone file system, and customizing the Springboard further. Multitasking is only supported on 3rd-generation and newer iOS devices and applications on the App Store are not allowed to modify the look of the OS.
Some jailbreakers also attempt to illegally share paid App Store applications. This focus has caused some strife within the jailbreaking community, as it was not the original focus of jailbreaking and is illegal. There are also some users who are opposed to Apples Censorship of content.

Till now, iOS is leading the Smart phone market. In future, we can expect iOS to give competition to Microsoft Windows operating system in personnel computers also.
