How to restrict the number of login attempts in Windows 7

We all know that many of the web services will allow you a limited number of login attempts to login into the site. Normally there will be a certain number of consecutive invalid login attempts after which you will not be allowed to login into the site further. This feature is helpful to prevent hackers to guess the passwords and try to login into the site. This kind of restriction is normally found in websites like sites related to banking transactions where money transactions are involved.

Method of restricting number of login attempts in Windows 7

You can restrict the number of invalid login attempts in Windows 7 with the help of Local Security Policy. The Local Security Policy is available only in Windows 7 Professional or above versions. Here is a procedure on how to restrict the number of login attempts in Windows 7.

  • Type 'Local Security Policy' in the search box in the start menu as shown below and press enter.

  • Selecting Local Security policy

  • Select Local Security Policy.

  • Now in the left hand side pane, you have to select 'Account Lockout Policy' under Account policies as shown below and double click on 'Account Lockout Threshold'

  • In the right pane, now you will see three options - 'Account lockout duration', 'Account lockout threshold', and 'Reset account lockout counter after'.

  • Now you select 'Account lockout threshold' and double click on it.

  • Selecting Account Lockout Threshold

  • Now you will see another window of Account lockout threshold properties where you can select the number of invalid login attempts.

  • Here you can select the number of invalid login attempts after which your computer will lock out and click on OK button. See a screen shot below.

  • Account Lockout properties dialog box

  • Now Windows will notify you that Account lockout duration and Reset account lockout counter will be set to default values. You can choose default values of
change them later on. Click OK.

  • The setting of Account lockout duration is the number of minutes a locked-out account remains locked becomes unlocking automatically. The default value is 30 minutes. If this value is set to '0', only administrator can unlock it.

Now if any one enters wrong password for more than the number of times the set value, the user accounts gets locked and Administrator has to unlock it or you have to wait until Account lockout duration.
