Are you a parent of a child or adolescent who uses the Internet, or the parent of a child who will soon start using Internet? If you are, you know that the Internet is a great way to keep abreast of the news, do research for school, and communicate with friends, but can be very dangerous. As a parent, it is your responsibility to ensure that your child is safe online. Unfortunately, for this to happen you need to know about running a PC and Internet. Do you know?
A child should never know more than their parents about Internet. At a minimum, should know the same thing. If we as parents are seeking to block adult websites or websites that have inappropriate content, do not do any good if your child knows how to escape the control that defines you as parents. Therefore it is important to know how to use a PC and Internet know about, or learn if they can not.
Another reason why you should be educated about Internet and PC usage, it is because you are better able to understand the dangers of these uses. You may hear on the news that an approaching predator or a child abducted, and you automatically assume that it will happen with your child. Unfortunately, until they understand how the Internet works, you'll really have no idea. Does your child use rooms chat or social networking sites? If so, you know what the Internet makes it easy for anyone to create a whole new false identity?
A good understanding of computer and Internet use can afford to protect your child. Did you know that Internet Explorer, the browser that comes default on Windows, there is a parental control option that only needs to be enabled or configured? A few easy steps and you can have certain websites blocked in your child. Unfortunately, I do not know if you know everything you know about the PC or the Internet. Now that you know the importance of increasing your knowledge about the Internet and a PC in general, you must be curious as to how you can learn more about this subject. The good news is that there are countless ways you can learn everything you need to know about computer and Internet use. Some of these forms are described below for your convenience.
Teach yourself is an easy way to learn about Internet and PC usage. In fact, what better way to use the computer and see what you find? To begin, browse your computer, or Internet browser and Internet security tools free for parents. You can also visit some of the websites you visit your son, just to see what they are doing for themselves. Visit his online profile page of MySpace, Facebook, or any other social networking website. Do you find it uncomfortable to go there? Are discussions taking place in the rooms adult chat in your child's favorite too?
You can also ask a friend or family member you trust. However, do not ask help your child or adolescent. If they know you want to set parental controls and monitor their Internet use may withhold important information for you. You can also take a course on Internet education and PC. These courses are sometimes offered free or at a reasonable price for local community groups, schools and training professional.
