What is the definition of a genuine Microsoft software?

Genuine Microsoft software can be defined as the software, which is published by Microsoft Corporation, which is properly licensed and completely supported by Microsoft Corporation, or it's trusted partner. The major benefit of using a genuine Microsoft software is that it offers a customer greater capabilities and easiest integration with most of the varieties of hardware, software and services. Microsoft genuine software also provides more confidence that a customer will receive only the latest product features, product updates, and all the ongoing improvements to keep his Personal Computer performing at its best status.

What is meant by Certificate of Authenticity or COA?

A Certificate of Authenticity or COA is a label, which helps a customer to identify the genuine Microsoft software. The Certificate of Authenticity or COA includes features on advanced piracy prevention to help the customer verify the authenticity of the software he is acquiring. A Certificate of Authenticity or COA may also contain barcode, which is used for Microsoft software product tracking purposes all along the globe. When a customer buys a genuine Microsoft software, he has to retain the Certificate of Authenticity or COA. Vice versa a Certificate of Authenticity or COA should always accompany the Microsoft software product which is associated with it. Please remember, the Certificate of Authenticity or COA cannot be purchased separately without any purchase of software. If a customer wishes to know more information about Certificate of Authenticity or COA, he can just view this webpage: http://www.microsoft.com/howtotell/content.aspx?displaylang=en&pg=coa

What is Proof of License?

Proof of License
The proof of license is a label in the orange color, which should accompany the installation media for Microsoft genuine software and it contains a 25-character product key for the said genuine software. To be more specific, the words "Proof of License" appear on the orange label or Proof of License. Also, remember that the proof of license label or orange label cannot be purchased separately without buying genuine software.
Further, the orange coloring on Proof of License label is a gradient type, which is lightest in the middle or center of the Proof of License label. The background of the Proof of License label contains the following words: "MICROSOFT PROOF OF LICENSE" in a microprint. Also a security thread displaying the word "Microsoft" is interwoven vertically in the middle or center of Proof of License label.
The said proof of license label displayed above has been in production in Microsoft Corporation since December 2006. Suppose a customer's proof of license label does not match with the one displayed above, he might have a previous versions of genuine Microsoft software. I recently bought a used laptop from a friend for very cheap price. In fact, the price is cheaper than the license price of Windows 7. He claims he has genuine Windows in the laptop. How to find if it is genuine or not? Is there any software I can run to find if the Windows is original or not?
