Sometimes you may need to hide files in your computer so that others will not be able to see them. This is normally done by encrypting but it needs additional software. One simple and best method is to hide the files in JPEG pictures. This article explains how to hide files in your computer in a JPEG file.

How to hide files in JPEG Pictures

Some times you may need to save some important and secret files in your computer which you do not want others to open and read. In such a situation you many need some encrypting softwares to prevent others from seeing or opening your files or folders. But there is another simple method in which you do not need any software but just save your files as a JPEG file.

You can hide the files in your computer in a JPEG file so that others will not be able to see these files. Others will only see the pictures when they open the JPEG file but not the hidden files in that picture. This can be done in Windows Vista and XP. You can hide any type of file in this way. And you can hide any number of files in a single JPEG picture. Let us see how this can be done.

  • First you should create a folder in your computer. Let us say that you create a folder "D:\Test". This is the folder where you have to put all the files that you want to hide. So move all the files you want to hide in to this folder

  • You also move the image file (JPEG file) into the same folder.

  • Next thing you have to do is to compress the files that are to be hidden into a single file. For example you can use WinRAR program to compress the files. Select only the files to be hidden and not the picture into the zip file. You can name it as some thing like "Hidden.RAR" or something like that.
Now you have all the files to be hidden in a single archieve "Hiddeen.RAR".

  • Now open the command prompt. Click on Start -> Run and type "CMD" and press Enter. Now you will see the command prompt window. Now goto the directory where you created the new folder. "D:\test". see the screen shot below

  • >Screen shot of command prompt in Windows

  • Now you need to type the following line in the command prompt and press Enter.
    copy /b Picture.jpg + Hidden.RAR Picture.jpg

  • You will see response as shown in the screen shot below.

  • That is all. The picture file will have the compressed archieve inside it. The file size of the picture might have been increased by same amount of the archieve file. You can check it.

  • Now you can access your hidden file by simply right-click on the JPEG picture file and you have to choose 'Open with' and select WinRAR. You can then extract your files using WinRAR.

Hope this article is useful to you.
