The Windows defendergives two options to protect from spywares.

Real time protection: In this mode, windows defender will alert you will messages when a spyware tries to install in your computer. It also alerts if any changes are taking place in windows settings.

Scheduled scanning: It is also possible to schedule a scan of spywares with windows defender on a regular basis and to remove them automatically during a scan.
