The memory diagnostic tool is a feature in Windows 7 which can be used for testing the RAM memory in your Windows 7 computer for errors. The memory diagnostic tool is very useful for detecting problems with memory of your computer. In this article I will explain how to use memory diagnostic tool for identifying problems with memory. Let us see how we can use the Memory diagnostic tool in Windows 7.

  • Type 'memo' in the search box in Start Menu. And select and click on 'Memory Diagnostic Tool' icon.

  • Now the window related to memory diagnostic tool will open up.

  • Now you need to select the option 'Restart now and check for problems' option in the window.

  • Once you select that option, you will see that your computer will restart and the memory diagnostic tool will start running and checking memory for errors. The tool will start scanning your system memory which takes several minutes.

  • Your computer will restart once again after the test is completed. If any problems are found with your memory, the tool will identify which memory module is faulty and displayed after you restart the computer.

  • You can even customize the scanning process. You need to press 'F1' key on your keyboard, while the tool is running the scanning process. Now you can press the 'TAB' key to switch between different options. The following settings are available.

    1. Test Mix : This option lets you choose the type of test that is to be run - basic, standard or extended.
    2. Cache files : This option lets you to set the cache setting for each test.
    3. Pass count : The third option is the 'pass count' which enables you to type the number of times the test is to be repeated. The default is two times.


  • The basic option enables you to run a limited number of tests. The standard type of test allows you to run all the tests. The extnded test allows you to run all the tests which take few hours to complete. Once you complete settings, press 'F10' to apply the settings and start the test with the options selected.

    The memory diagnostic tool is very useful tool for identifying problems related to memory.
