How to Defragment your disk in Windows 7

This article explains how to defragment your hard disk and other removable disk in Windows 7 in order to rearrange the data in disk to work with the system more efficiently. Using Windows 7 you can schedule the disk defragmentation.


How to Defragment your disk in Windows 7


Windows disk defragmentation is one of the utility to improve the performance of the system by allocating continues space of the files that are in the operating system. Performance of the system will always depends on the files, because if the file logical locations are not arranged in contiguous memory location I hard disk then access the files will take some time for the large files it will take more time to access the disk. Removable disk like USB flash drives can also be defragmented using this utility.

Only NTFS, FAT or FAT32 file system can be defragmented using this utility. Network drives cannot be defragmented.

In order to fragment the disk you require administrator permission.

In order to arrange the files logically you need to use the Disk Defragmenter to arrange the files in contiguous logical locations. Disk Defragmenter will allow you to perform this task.

Open the Disk defragmenter by clicking the Windows start button and click the All Programs and expand Accessories and open System Tools and finally click the Disk Defragmenter utility will open Disk Defragmenter Window.

You can open the Disk Defragmenter by using the executable name. Click Windows start button and click inside the Windows Search button and type dfrgui and select the disk defragmenter utility, otherwise click Windows start button and select Windows Run prompt and then type dfrgui and press enter button will open the Disk Defragmenter utility (Check the below screenshot).

Disk defragmenter utility will show the list of drive that can be defragmented. It will show the last time you fragmented the drive. Before doing the Defragmentation click "Analyze disk" and check the disk whether the defragmentation is required or not and if required then defragment.

By selecting "Configure schedule..." you can schedule the disk defragmenter at a particular time to run on weekly or monthly based on the usage of the files in the system. If you frequently move or modify the file system then you can schedule to run the disk defragmentation once month

Once the disk analysis is completed if required then click the Defragment disk button will run the first pass for the relocation and then it will consolidated and if required it will start the second pass, for each pass it will do relocation, defragmentation and finally it will consolidate the drive.

In order to defragment the disks automatically click Configure schedule button will open Disk Defragmenter: Modify Schedule Windows, which is used to schedule the disk. You can set the frequency of the schedule based on your disk files modifications and relocating the files. Monthly once is the recommended for all type of users, because it will take a long time to complete this task. Select the Frequency that you want to run, Day and time to schedule the disk

Click Select disks… button will open a new window from there you can select all the disks which are present in the system or you can select specific disks to run the defragmentation. Select the disks and click ok button to schedule the disk defragmentation automatically.

Select Run on a schedule (recommended)
