This article explains how to change the file association in Windows 7 by choosing the default software will open the files in the associated software
How to change the File association in Windows 7
Windows is able to open the files with the associated software or programs which is installed in the Windows operating system. Windows operating system will identify the files and it will automatically associate the files that are compatible to open in the respective software's.
If any new file is downloaded or not recognized by the Windows operating system can be opened in the respective software if we know about the file otherwise we can check in internet to know more about the files in order to find the appropriate software. If the operating system identifies the specific file extension which is of known type then it will associate the software to open the file and also it will associate software's icon to the files.
To associate the file extension to the software that is installed in Windows 7, click Windows start button and select
Default Programs
(Check the below
screenshot)
By Selecting Default Program link will open Default Programs Window which is in Control panel. Now select
Set your default programs
link to add a file association or modify the file association will take some time to load the default programs of the Windows operating system and select a program which are listed in the
Programs
list and it will show two options and
Set this program as default
option will associate all the files type to the selected software if the files can be opened using more than software.
For example if two web browsers are installed in your system and the by default one software will open all the files associated with the web browser and you can modify the option so that the file can be opened in the software in which you want to open (Check the below screenshot)
If you want to open all the relevant files with the selected software then you can click
Set this program as default
.
If you want to select specific files that you want to associate with the selected software or all the files then choose
Choose defaults for this program
will show all the files that can be opened with the selected program (Check the below screenshot)
In
Set Program Associations
will list the software can be opened with the selected software. You can select all the file extension by selecting
Select All
check box and click the
Save button
to change the default setting of the file association to another program. If you want to open specific files then select the individual file extension and click the
Save
button to modify the file association.
Once the modification is done now the file extension which you modified will open in the selected software.
