A review of the Windows Movie Maker

This article explains Windows Movie Maker which is supported in Windows XP and previous version and it includes Transitions effects, TimeLine, Storyboard and other features which makes easier to create a movie.


Windows Movie Maker is video editing software from Microsoft and it was not supported in Windows Vista and Windows 7. Movie Maker is supported before Windows Vista. The first version of Windows Movie maker in 2000 for Windows ME and the Windows XP version are also supported and it includes some more enhancements. Windows Movie maker include features alike Transitions effects, audio track, Timeline narration and AutoMovie.

Windows Movie maker include storyboard, Timeline, tasks pane which shows the general tasks than you want to do while doing the making includes editing or importing the files. Collection pane shows all the collection of folder which can contain some clips or files in it.

Content pane shows the effects of the clips or transitions when you are making a movie, it has two options to show the content in details or thumbnails. While making a movie you can drag and drop the clips, effects from content or collection pane to storyboard and timeline. Preview monitor will play the movie preview and you can make changes to the clips and it will not affect the original file and it will be modified in the current project file.

Windows Movie Maker is video editing software used to create and edit video files. Using Windows Movie Maker you can create a video from photos and audio with transition effects.

Storyboard will be used to view the clips in the sequence of the movie and you can rearrange the clips according to your movie. Video effects can be seen in storyboard and audio effects can be seen in timeline.
Timeline will show you the clips and you can edit the files to trim the length of the video clips, modify the duration of the clips and as well as audio tracks. You can zoom in or out of the project; audio level adjustment can be done in Timeline.

Preview Monitor is to view the clips. Clips can be viewed in group or a clip can be viewed in the preview. You can divide a clip into 2 clips by using the split button of the preview monitor. You can use the preview monitor to view the clips frame by frame. You can adjust the size of the preview monitor by using Preview Monitor size.

You can directly open the external device files to the movie maker using the File  Import from Digital Video Camera without copying to the system to view the video clips and photos. Analog video's cannot be imported to Windows Movie maker, as it requires a along video capture device to convert the analog video to digital and then you can use the Movie maker to use the clips.

Windows Movie Maker supports to burn DVD using Windows DVD maker, which is not available in Windows XP. Windows DVD maker is available in Windows Vista Ultimate, Windows Vista Home premium and all the Windows 7 versions.
Windows Movie Maker supports Windows Media Video (WMV), Audio Video Interleave (AVI). HD and direct upload to YouTube is not supported in Windows Movie maker.

Windows Live Movie Maker supports Direct Upload to YouTube and HD, but TimeLine features and other features are removed from Live Movie Maker. Live Movie Maker is not supported in Windows XP ore previous version. It is supported in Windows Vista and Windows 7
