How to Backup and restore Windows drivers

Device Drivers are so important in a computer in order to work the device in a Windows environment. For each version of Windows we require different version of the device drivers. A device driver is simply software that will communicate with the device, driver will communicate the hardware device by using command and then hardware device will return the response to the device driver.

Device drivers are hardware dependent and for each operating system version there will be a separate driver to support the specific operating system. Device drivers are intermediate between the device and the operating system.
Some of the examples of device are printer, video adapters, sound cards, network devices and many more.

Many of the drivers like CD drivers, video device drivers and other device drivers will be included in operating system. If the system is new after the operating system is released then we need to find the suitable drivers from the manufacturer CD or you can download the suitable drivers from the internet.

In order to find out the what is the device drivers manufacturer or the band name or some other information can be found out using Belarc advisor a free tool. It will list the entire device that is attached to your computer and it easier to find the driver for the device.

Now we will see how to back up the device driver in case you want to format the system or the device driver is corrupted.

Using Windows operating system you cannot take a back up of the device drivers alone you need to take the backup of device drivers that are installed in your system using 3rd part tools.

Free Device Driver Backup tools

Free Device driver backup tools will allow us to backup the device drivers so that we can install the device drivers when required. We will not know when the system will crash or break down. So it is important to take a back up of all your device drivers instead of finding the various drivers in the internet.

Double Driver

Double Drive is one of the new free device driver backup tools. It will list all the drivers that are installed in the system and you can take a print out of the devices that are installed in your system. It is easy to use just like installing any other software.

Once download the zip file extract the zip file and open dd.exe and click the Backup tab and click the Scan Current System will show you all the device drivers that are installed in the system within few seconds. You can save the list in a text file by selecting Save button and you can print the list by selecting the Print button. Click the Backup Now button will ask you the destination back that you want to backup all the device drives and you can select the output as Structured FolderCompressed (zipped) folder options will create a sip folder will all the device drives. Single file self extract (executable) will create a single exe file which will contain all the device driver files. Creating the self extract exe is the better option as it is easy to install (Check the below screen shot)

Once the backup is done you can write the files in a CD or DVD or in a USB flash drive and keep it safe. If you selected the Structured folder it will create the folder for each of the drivers (Check the below screen shot).

In order to restore the backup you require administrator permission as it will install the device drives requires admin permission. If you don't want to install each driver separately you can take a backup using the Single file self extract (executable) . It will create a single exe file which will contain all the device driver files. It is easy to install than the other options.
