File permissions are the rules associated with files and folders in Windows 7. The file permissions tell whether you can access that file or what you can do with it. This article explains more about file permissions.

File and folder permissions in Windows 7

File permissions allow you to determine whether you can access a file, or read or modify a particular file or folder. For example, you might have a permission to read a file or a document on a shared folder, but you may not able to make changes to that document because you do not have write permissions on that document.

Let us see what are the different types of file permissions available in Windows 7.

  • Full Control: With full control permission, you can view the contents of a file or folder. You can change or modify the content of a file, or create new files or folders etc.
  • Modify permission: With this permission, you can only change or modify a file or a folder, but you cannot create a new file or folder.
  • Read and Executive: With Read and execute permission, you can see the contents of a file or folder and also you can run programs in the folder
  • Read permission: With a read permission, you can only see the contents of a folder and open the files and folders.
  • Write permisison: with Write permission, you can create new files in the folder and modify the content of files.
