How to enable fast switching between users in Windows XP

Windows Vista and Windows 7 are enabled with switching between the users without log off the system. When you switch between users then the programs which are running in one user will continue to run and you can again switch to the users to continue your work. It is a very useful feature in Windows Vista and Window 7.

Windows XP users are having similar options in XP which will be easier to switch between users without log off the system. It will be helpful when your home computer for personal, official and entertainment purpose. If your computer is set up with multiple accounts then you can use the fast switching between users without log off the computer.

This fast switching option is not possible in office environment where the users will use the Active directory account to log in to the machine. If your computer is joined in the AD service then fast switching will be automatically disabled in Windows XP

How to enable the fast switching

Most of the computer will be automatically enabled for the fast switching. However if it is not enabled by default then you can modify the settings to enable the fast switching between users.

In order test this options you need to have more than one user account in your Windows XP system. To check the switch between users is enabled or not in Windows XP system click Windows Start button and then click log off and it will show log off and Switch users options if you see both the options then switch users option is enabled in Windows XP.

To enable the switch user option Windows XP

  • Log on to the Windows XP system as an Administrator, only administrator can enable the feature.

  • Click the Windows start button and click the control panel and select the User Accounts

  • select the link Change the ways users log on or off

  • From the Change the ways users log on or off select the Fast user switching check box and it this fast switching option is enabled then when the otherwise try to log on to machine then the programs running in other account will be running and it will not get disturbed

  • Fast switching mode cannot be disabled when one than one users is logged in to the system.

By enabling the Fast-User switching option the programs running with other users will cause the performance degrade to the operating system when the system is having less RAM and processing power.

Once the Fast-User switching is enable then you can check it by pressing
Windows key + L button to go to the Log off window in order to see the Switch Users option is enabled.
