A new malware known as Stuxnet has been identified which poses severe threat to the systems that it places its attack on. In this article I would like to introduce few details of the latest malware that is spreading rapidly.

It is coming in two formats: Stuxnet.A and Stuxnet.B which are stored as drivers on the infected PC. The attack has been so well planned that these drivers come with a trusted digital signature of Realtek SC Corp. Sad to hear, but as per the statistics gathered from various sources on the frequency of attacks of this malware, India is standing in the third position in terms of the leading countries that has reported high number of attacks by this malware. Asian countries are being targeted by this malware when compared to other continents.

What is Stuxnet

Stuxnet has been classified as a worm. It gets into any USB removable device that is attached to the infected computer. Stuxnet is nothing but a Trojan worm that protrudes into the system by attacking the .lnk extension system files. Once the operating system reads these files that are used for accessing the removable USB devices, the worm automatically spreads and attacks the system.

How to identify Stuxnet presence in our system

Now as we have known what is Stuxnet, we would be afraid if our system has been infected by it. To know if it has attacked our system too then we need to check for the presence of the following files on our system.
1) mrxcls.sys in our system folder
2) MRxCls in the CurrentControlSet System services registrey key.

Purpose of Stuxnet

Stuxnet serves the purpose of stealing the complete information from a system. It especially attacks the systems that have some particular softwares installed.

How to save our computer from being attacked

We are well familiar with the Newton Law that states "For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction". This can be modified a bit to suit our situation and can be stated as "For every attack on a computer there is always a prevention". Yes this is true. As I have mentioned in many of my resources by following few simple techniques we can save our PC from such harmful and malicious attacks. I will mention those steps so that each one of us can follow them immediately to save our computers.

1) Always update your operating system to the latest patches released.

2) Do not open suspicious email attachments.

3) Do not visit in-secure sites.

4) Do not click on links that you are not sure of.

5) Always keep your firewall in enabled mode.

6) Install an anti-virus and perform a complete scan at least once a week.

Follow these simple steps which would make our system Stuxnet free.
