How to overcome sound problems on Windows XP

In this resource i would like to introduce few steps which can be used for overcoming the sound related issues on Windows XP.


How to troubleshoot Sound problems on Windows XP


While using our computer suddenly we find that the sound from our speakers or headphones is not coming out. There are a wide variety of reasons for this issue. When sound is not coming out for any of the applications or programs being used then there might be problem with the cables/drivers/hardware.

Check out the below troubleshooting steps which would highly help you in coming out of the issue.

Hardware issue


Make sure you are logged in on your system as an administrator.

1) Click on Start

2) Click on Control Panel

3) Double click on System

4) A new window opens up

5) Click on the hardware tab.

6) Click on Device Manager.

7) Double click on Sound, video and game controllers to expand that category. If you find a sound card listed, then you have it installed on your system.

8) If you do not see that you need to install one.

9) If you cannot see the card in the category even after installing, then you need to check by expanding the Other Devices category.

10) Once you locate the sound card and if you find a yellow mark next to the name of the sound card then it implies that there is a problem with it.

11) Right click on the name of sound card.

12) Click on Properties.

13) Click on the General Tab in the window that opens up.

14) Look in the device status box where you will have the problem with the sound card.

15) If this is the problem then you would need to update or repair the driver.

Problem with the cables


1) Check for the connections of all the cables.

2) If all the cables are connected properly, recheck if they are in the correct ports.

Mute might be enabled


1) Click on Start

2) Click on All programs.

3) Go To Accessories.

4) Go to Entertainment.

5) Click on Volume Control

6) If you find that the volume controls are muted , just unmute them.
