Various features of the Unix operating system?

The Unix is the operating system coming before the Linux operating system

The process management of the Unix keeps the track of the user processes by having a data structure PCB (Process Control Block) which is combination of two or more data structures.

So, when a program is loaded into the main memory then the complete PCB is loaded into main memory.

When it is swapped out, some of the information, such as process id, pointers to its memory image, scheduling information etc is residue in the main memory where as the remaining information such as saved state of CPU registers, a list of files opened by the process and accounting information, is swapped with the process image.

Unix features

The Unix operating system is the multi user and multi programming time sharing operating system and it is made for the interactive users.

Earlier Unix system uses a 1 second time slice for the round robin scheduling. This scheduling is flow by the timer after certain time interval.

The small CPU time slice is given to all active processes by a priority algorithm. The priority is assigned according to the activity. As the system processes are given high priority as compare to users.

In system processes the priority is provided on the event basis. For Example- keyboard has a high priority than others device.
