Google Gears is a web browser extension that allows us to download information from some applications that are Google Gears compatible and makes it possible to access them offline.
Google Gears
Google Gears is an extension being provided by Google for the web browser. This downloads the data to our hard disk and makes it possible for some online applications to be accessed offline.
However all the applications are not supported by Google Gears. Not all the online applications can be used offline by using Google Gears. Only applications that are written exclusively to have Google Gears use them can be used offline for accessing with the help of Google Gears.
The browsers on which Google Gears are supported on Windows operating system are Internet Explorer, Firefox and Google Chrome.
Few of the Google applications that can be used Offline with the help of Google Gears are:
Google Reader
Gmail
Google Docs &
Google Calender
Using the Google Gears functionality, 2000 of the recent items browsed on Google reader can be downloaded for offline use.
Google Gear functionality is teamed up with Gmail where you can read the mails, compose new mails and click on send too. But the actual sending of messages is done automatically when you are connected online.
Google Gears can be used to access Google Docs offline but with limited features like viewing and editing the existing documents, excel sheets or presentations but does not allow to create new items.
Google Calender can be read online using Google Gears but the limitations are that you cannot create new tasks or edit the existing tasks.
Limitations of Google Gears:
Google Gears
should be used only if required. This is because all the downloaded data occupies a fair amount of space on the hard disk which degrades the system performance.
This should not be used on public computers as this can lead to information leakage threat as the information directly goes and resides on the hard disk as and when Google Gears is used.
Google Gears is not only used by the applications of Google but is also used by some third party applications.
Last but not the least to mention
google gears
is available at
gears.google.com
