Microsoft Compatibility Pack (MCP)

As the name itself suggest Microsoft Compatibility Pack is a utility that makes applications present in different Microsoft Office versions compatible with each other.

I recently received a file from one of my friends which was a high priority file. It was in docx format and I had Microsoft Office 2003 installed on my system. I tried opening the file several times using different applications but I failed. I called my friend who then told me that it was a doument created using latest version of Microsoft Office and hence was not opening in my system. I got a bit tensed as I was in a position where I could not buy Microsoft Office latest version at that point of time and revealed the same to him.

This was when I came to know that we need not spend any money for making such files and documents to be opened using 2003, instead we just need to download MCP - Microsoft Compatibility pack which would be very much helpful in the situations where we need to open, work with and save the contents of the documents, excel sheets or power point presentations which are created using latest version of Microsoft office.

Let me introduce you one more interesting fact about this MCP. Have you worked on Windows Vista ever. If yes then you would have fallen in love with the latest fonts introduced in it which are very cool when compared to the fonts available with windows XP.

Having known about MCP, now you would like to install it on your PC too. I understnad your interest. The Microsoft Office Compatibility pack can be downloaded here.

The following are the steps to be followed :

1) Go to the link provided above.
2) Click on the download button on the page
3) A message box appears prompting to save or cancel the download.
4) Click on Save
5) Once, it has been saved, go to the location where you saved it.
6) Double click on FileFormatconverters.exe to start the installation process.
7) A new window opens up which guides you through the rest of the installation process.

Thats it. As simple as it sounds.
