This article discusses on how to solve problems related to DVD drive in Windows XP if we cannot play DVD movies in a Windows XP.
Cannot play DVD movies in DVD drive of Windows XP PC
Some people have a problem playing DVD movies in the DVD drive of Windows XP laptop or a desk top. They get an error message saying that "Windows media player cannot play this DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed in your computer". This is a common error message most people get in their computers when they try to play DVD movies. Let us see what is wrong and how to solve this problem.
The Windows 7 and Vista operating systems have a built in DVD decoder which is not available in Windows XP. Hence the DVD movie cannot be played and you get the error message as above in your windows XP computer.
VLC media player is the best solution to play DVD movies. you can down load VLC media player from http://www.videolan.org/vlc/. Once downloaded and installed VLC media player, you can run it from the start menu and insert the DVD movie disk in your DVD drive. The movie will start playing without any problem. The VLC media player can play most of the media file types. VLC player supports DVDs.
This would solve most of the DVD movie playing problems in Windows XP. If anybody has some other solution, you can post it as an answer to this thread so that other members will know about the solution.
