Cloud computing has revolutionized the modern day computing.

What is Cloud Computing

Cloud Computing is a computing system which completely depends upon a sharing method based on the internet. In the Cloud Computing system, files and information are shared to build up and interactive network of computing. Cloud Computing relates a new consumption, delivery model and supplement involving the internet provision of virtualized and dynamically scalable resources. Elastic provision, online illusion of infinite supply and the like are the main features of cloud computing. The picture below shows the logical diagram of cloud computing.

The History of Cloud Computing

The history of cloud computing is almost 50 years old. The main concept of cloud computing takes us back to the 1960s. In the 1960s, John McCarthy foretold that computation will be in future organized as a public utility. Most of the modern features of cloud computing like elastic provision and so on were originated in the 1960s. In 1966, Douglas Parkhill came up with an epoch making book in the history of computing, entitled, The Challenge of the Computer Utility. This was virtually the beginning of the main concepts of modern day cloud computing.

The term cloud in Cloud Computing is actually a metaphor. The term cloud in Cloud Computing was borrowed from the sphere of telephony and telecommunications. Until the last decade of the bygone century telecommunication companies provided dedicated data circuits. In recent times those telecommunication companies started offering VPN or Virtual Private Network services. The service of the VPN was comparable in quality to the previous services but the cost was much lower. A key role in the history of cloud computing was also playing by Amazon. Amazon revolutionized the concept of cloud computing by a vast modernization in the field of data transfer. Google and IBM later in 2007 again revitalized cloud computing by embarking on a mammoth cloud computing project.
