I recently encountered the windows update error in my laptop which is having Windows 7.Windows Update fails for some reason. The reason could be anything like permission or firewall or Antivirus and many more.
To resolve the error 646(Windows update fails). One of the easiest ways is find the alternate way to resolve this issue.

Step 1

Open the windows update from control panel --> system and security --> windows update and you can see the list of the items which is failed and double click on any of the failed items and it will open a pop up which will show the details of the error. It will show a link to the location of the windows update click the link and download from the website manually and install it.

Step 2

Run the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool
Check the below link to download

Next is to Download, install, update and run SUPERAntispyware – FreeWare
http://www.superantispyware.com/downloadfile.html?productid=SUPERANTISPYWAREFREE (freeware)
Then download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - Freeware
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Complete it with an online scan -in safe mode with internet connection

If still it is not working Checking for Help with Spyware, Malware and Hijackware!
