Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool is a malicious software removal tool provided by Microsoft.

Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool

Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool checks for and removes the infections on our system that have been caused by specific malicious software's that include but are not limited to Blaster, Sasser, Mydoom. This tool is compatible on all the systems that host one of the following OS - Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows Server 2003.

Now you might feel it as another antivirus software but let me tell you that this tool is a bit different from the regular anti virus program that we have on our systems. The regular anti virus software block malicious software from entering the system where the tool removes the malicious software that is currently running on the system. The tool also cannot remove all the malicious software's. It is equipped with the capability of removing only a few malicious software's at present and that too only the active malicious software's that are running currently on the system.

So, people who wish to download and use this tool are also suggested to use a regular anti virus protection on their system. Microsoft is coming up with a new release of the tool every month as it is trying to improve the features of the tool by adding more malicious software's to the removal list. This monthly release happens on every second Tuesday of the month.

Also this tool does not act on spywares. As the name suggests it just acts on the malicious software's that include Trojan horses and viruses.

This tool can be downloaded from the site http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx. If you feel that you will forget about the monthly updates just turn on the Automatic Updates to ON which will check for the latest version and update automatically.

The tool runs in quiet mode unless it finds an infection. If you have not been notified of an infection, no malicious software has been found that needs your attention. Once it finds an infection it will show you at the next start up by throwing you an alert in the form of a balloon at your notification area.

It is advised to run a full scan once on a month to scan all fixed and removable drives which will ensure that no active malicious software is running on your system. Also when the tool identifies a malicious software it prompts to run a full scan of your system.

If any malicious software has infected files on your computer, the tool prompts you to remove the malicious software from those files. If the malicious software modified your browser settings, your homepage might change automatically that gives you directions on how to restore the modified settings.

You can clean specific files or all the infected files. There are chances of data loss during this process. Also, the tool may be unable to restore some files to the original, pre-infected state.

Restart of your computer might also be prompted by the tool for the removal of some malicious software's.

Finally the important points to be noted from the above article are

1) As computers can appear to normally when infected, it is always suggested to run this tool regularly.
2) It is always advised to have up-to-date anti virus software to help protect your computer from other malicious software.
