Antivirus software will protect your computer against virus, spyware, malware, cross scripting attack that not only destroying your computer, it will steal important information from your computer.

Install one of the antivirus software (AVG basic version is free) and keep the antivirus software up to date that will help you protect your computer

Always update your computer with latest security patches, service patches from windows (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/, http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=148275)

Firewall are necessary even though you installed antivirus software. Use Firewall (Windows 7, XP with SP2 is having a firewall and it is turned
on automatically)

Secure your browser from scripting attack by disabling the JavaScript. It will eliminate the unwanted JavaScript pop-ups as well.

Most of the worms and Trojan virus will spread through Email. Avoid opening the attachment when you received from unknown.

Instant messenger is one of the targets for the worms, so do not open the attachment , before opening the attachment scan it first using a online scanned(Kaspersky online scanner is one of the best for the files which is less than 1 Mb)

Avoid P2P and distributed file sharing. It might have with Trojans, viruses, worms, adware, and spyware with malicious code that will infect
your computer.

By default , a wireless ready laptop or computer running in Windows XP will connect to “Any available network” and it also connects to the
un-protected networks also.

Avoid listening to the internet scams beware of email masquerading as a security concern from your bank or making unsolicited job offers, or promising lotto winnings.
