Are you a Vodafone subscriber and like to upgrade to 4G? Read this article to learn some tips on how to upgrade to Vodafone 4G services.

On Dec 8, 2015, Vodafone announced the roll out of 4G services in Kochi, Kerala on their state of the art 1800MHz 4G LTE network. With this launch, Vodafone has become the first network provider to offer 2G, 3G and 4G services in the state. The ultra high speed 4G services will be rolled out in Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata very soon.

The high speed 4G network assures high speed upload and download. In ideal conditions, you will be able to download a full movie in a few minutes.

Company has made arrangements to replace your existing SIM with a new 4G SIM for free through a seamless experience. Here are few options to upgrade to 4G:

Option 1. Visit any Vodafone service centre and ask for a replacement. They will give you a new 4G SIM on the spot.

Option 2. Send an SMS to the number 199 with the message "4GSIM".

Post paid 4G SIMs will be delivered at your door steps on the same day if you place the request before 4:00pm. Well, I am not sure how realistic this offer would be but at the maximum you can expect a new SIM in the next 1 or 2 days.

Vodafone 4G speed test

Company has not made any official statements on the actual speed of the 4G services. However, I was able to test the speed in their launch event in Kochi. In the test conditions, it gave a super fast speed of 100Mb/s. But please note that you may not get this speed on your devices since the actual speed depends on several factors including your location and the overall 4G network performance in your area. The 100 Mbps speed I got was in the testing device just after the official roll out of 4G when there were no other users and the antennas were optimized to give the best performance in the launch location.

Is it worth upgrading to 4G

Many subscribers may be wondering if they need to upgrade to 4G. Well, when there is a new technology that offers a much better speed performance, why not take advantage? There are some initial offers which are worth considering. Some special offers for the 4G customers:

1. Free upgrade to 4G SIM

2. Free access to 7500+ movies with a partnership through Hangama Play for first 3 months.

3. More than 1.2 million songs to stream and listen at Vodafone Music.

4. 100% extra data for all 4G RED customers for 3 months

5. Data packs starts from Rs 29 for 120MB at lightning fast 4G speed.

Please note that the speed may be inconsistent and may vary from place to place and time to time. The screenshot shown here shows the 4G speed of Vodafone on a smartphone at a test location and this speed may not be available for all customers at all times.

It would be interesting to see how much would be the speed and performance with the increased user base. Indian telecoms always make much hue and cry on launching a service, but when it comes to actually delivering it, they just eat the dust. There are places that Vodafone is not able to provide proper 2G service, so it would be interesting to see how will they cope with 4G.
