Asus Zenbook Pro UX501 - A complete analysis

Asus has recently launched a premium Ultrabook - the Asus Zenbook Pro UX501. Aimed to be an upgrade to the last year's NX500, the new iteration impresses quite a lot. Asus promises a high end performance and a premium experience. Let us try to understand the core features of the Zenbook Pro UX501 in the following article.

Asus Zenbook Pro UX501 is one of the best premium laptops available currently in the market. Promising one of the fastest read/write performance and a stunning display, the laptop is worth receiving a good feedback. Topped up with core specs and stunning design features, Asus Zenbook Pro UX501 is truly a good option. We will delve into some finer details in the following paragraphs.

Design and Display

The Asus Zenbook Pro UX501 has a close resemblance to Apple. You may easily mistake it for a Macbook. Construction from Aluminium for the lid and body provides a premium look to the laptop. In keeping tune with Asus' trademark concentric circles make their appearance on the lid.
The build is quite solid. The edges are rounded, while the inside corners has a chamfered surface. The keyboard and the palm rest have a matte finish which adds up to the premium look of the device. The backlight on keyboard is not distracting. The black lettering on the keyboard makes the letters visible even without backlight.
The palm rest is quite large and comfortable. A rubber lining across the display seals off keyboard when the lid is closed. There are three USB 3.0 ports at your disposal. Other ports include a HDMI port, a charging port, a headphones-mic combo jack and SD card slot. There is a miniDisplay port. However, models sold in India will carry a Thunderbolt port instead of a MiniDP.
Keypad has a good spacing. You get a comfortable tactile feedback. The mouse buttons too are quite comfortable to operate.
The Zenbook Pro UX501 has a 15.6 inch IPS screen with UHD resolution at 2160x3840 pixels. It supports 10 point multi touch functionality. The colors appear bright and vibrant. Text is quite clear. The pixel density reads 282 ppi. The display has no anti glare treatment of any nature, which could lead to reflections.

Hardware

The Asus Zenbook Pro UX501 is powered by a high end Intel Core i7-4720HQ CPU. The clock speed of the processor reads 2.2 GHz. You can turbo it upto 3.6 GHz. The graphics are taken care of with Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M GPU. A massive 16 GB DDR3 RAM makes it a powerhouse performer. 512 GB SSD from Samsung makes up for a good storage.

Performance

Apps do perform faster. This has more to do with the faster SSD. Scaling is done beautifully for native apps. However, the apps that do not comply with Windows scaling are rendered in native resolution. This results in every detail appearing smaller and uncomfortable.
The palm rest does not heat up even after extensive usage. The keypad is comfortable to work with with no fatigue factor. You have three back light options to choose from. The trackpad too works quite flawlessly.
The device is a good multimedia companion. Full HD videos look awesome on the display, thanks to IPS technology. The viewing angles are comfortably good enough.

Battery Life

Zenbook Pro UX501 does not have a great sounding battery life. Asus has claimed that the laptop will offer you a backup of upto 6 hours. The device seems to live up to this estimate. A normal usage pattern gives a close to 5 hours of backup. In fact, the battery life is quite disappointing, yet can be considered worthwhile given its high resolution display.

What is so good about it?

Well, you will definitely fall in love with the display of Zenbook Pro UX501. Whatever you are doing with the laptop - be it watching HD videos, or checking out the documents - the 4K display makes a big difference. The screen has an awesome clarity. Colors are vibrant and text appears crisp.
Then the keypad. Especially, the back light on the keys. As said before, the back light does not bleed - which makes it distraction free. The letters are quite visible even without back light.
Then comes the faster and spacious SSD. It employs the advanced PCle X 4 standard. It really makes everything you do with the laptop go super smooth.

Anything to be worried about?

There are a few reasons to gripe about. The first one that comes to mind is the weight. It affects the portability quite a lot. If you are one of those guys who are constantly on the move, carrying a 2.2 kg device could be a big issue.
Another reason that could influence your decision is the app scaling. Yes, some of the apps which do not comply with Windows standard need to be rendered in a 100% resolution. This makes things quite small which causes strain on your eyes.
Lack of any anti glare treatment for the screen results in heavy reflection. In fact, the display is reflective even with the full brightness.

Price and availability

The laptop is definitely not everyone's cup of tea. It will cost you Rs. 115999! Touted to be a competitor for Macbook Pro, the laptop is available across offline and online stores. You can buy it from your local dealers or from exclusive partners like Flipkart and Asus' own online store.

h2>Final ThoughtsIf cost is not an issue for you and if you are a fan of great aesthetics and a stunning display, the Asus Zenbook Pro UK501 is sure shot pick for you. But, do not forget to pay attention to the heavy build and a mediocre battery life as well. The snappier and faster Samsung SSD makes it an ideal companion for content developers. Having said that the Zenbook Pro UX501 is a really a gem with high end specifications that you will get with more expensive laptops. The awesome display, a faster SSD and a premium build make it a force to reckon with.
