The Best Android apps for Indian users

There is an android app for almost everything Indian - learn to wear a saree app, find your way around map app, spiritual 'gyan' app, news app, cook delicious food app, restaurant & takeaway apps

Are you making full use of your Android phone? Does it make life easier for you with little apps that solve everyday problems such as how to get to a meeting or where to eat? If not, you need to check out some great apps that every Indian Android user must have - and I mean to go beyond Bollywood music or Indian friend finders with this list.

NaviMaps by MapMyIndia

Next to Google Maps, the official navigation app by MapMyIndia is a must-have for travel happy Indians or those with just plain poor sense of direction. The best part about this highly accurate 3D GPS navigation app is that it is offline, so you do not need a data connection or phone connectivity to find your way out of whichever maze you have ended up in.

The free version is good enough to get you alternate routes to where you want to go, as well as Multi-stop routing, easy switching between Straightforward menus and map view, plus route sharing on social media and the latest Live Traffic. If you pay Rs 599, you get the lifetime full-featured app with re-route suggestions, turn-by-turn voice guidance in English and Hindi and some other great features.

NDTV News

Do you find yourself turning to Twitter or Facebook for "fresh" news? It is probably faster than getting the breaking news on TV the following day when it is not so fresh. But you could catch up on the stories that social media does not find exciting on the NDTV app anywhere and anytime. It is free and gets you live NDTV videos from 24X7, Profit, India, Good Times and Prime.

m-Indicator – Mumbai

Having trouble navigating Mumbai transportation in particular? Need advice on how to get to your destination the quickest possible way? Check out the Indicator app that gives you local and express train timetables, ticket fares and rail maps, Metro and Monorail timings, maps and fares, bus details, information on auto and taxi fares and other useful data you will often find yourself thankful for, especially if you are new to the city. And the best part is, it is free!

Zomato

No Indian Android wielder can be happy without an app to point them to the nearest and best Thalassery biryani in Kozhikode or the most lip-smacking sushi in Lower Parel. Just get the Zomato app on your phone for free and you can get well-laid out reviews, menus, expected dents in your wallet and a map to guide you. You can call the restaurant to make a reservation or have packed food delivered to wherever you are. This is a very desi app, though, so do not ask it for help when you are in Southhampton, or it may try to convince you that you are back home in Hyderabad.

The "How To Wear A Sari" App

Here is an unusual but useful one. All young girls and women out there studying or working away from home: do you miss your mother, nani or mausi when it comes time for a social or a traditional event? Fret no longer. Teach yourself how to wear a sari with the free lifestyle app by Elsner Technologies. It is aimed at non-Indians who want to fit into Indian weddings, but there are certainly tons of Indian users who would love the simple step-by-step tutorials for casual or formal style sari.

Sweet N' Spicy – Indian Recipes

If you are entertaining guests or miss home cooked meal but do not know a kadhai from a kadhi, you may need this well designed recipes app powered by fullmeals.com. It offers a huge collection of sweet and savory dishes, plus separate categories for vegetarian, non-vegetarian and the New Age desi vegan. The categories are truly useful, because you can also arrange them by ingredients. So look in your refrigerator, pull out the ingredients you have and find a relevant recipe with this free app.

Art of Living Radio – Radiowalla

Get a little on-the-go spirituality into your life with technology. Stream the Art of Living's official radio station with bhajans, live discourses, guided meditation and Ayurvedic solutions straight from the charismatic Sri Sri Ravi Shankar's domain. Stress-busting and happiness with Guru Ravi Shankar is just a signup away – you have to register at www.Radiowalla.in before you can access the app.

This list of Android apps should have something for everyone. Try them and find out how they make life easier – most of them do not cost a paise!

Apart from these, I use many other apps like Whatsapp, Paytm (For recharge), Flipkart shopping app, Mobile banking app, Facebook app, apps for reading latest news etc on a daily basis. This is a very good article and I came to know about some apps which I hadn’t heard of. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for the feedback. I am glad you liked the apps I've shared through this resource.I thought it a good idea to introduce something different to the Indian audience. We all use WhatsApp, Faebook app etc...but there is so much more available to us today in the form of apps.
