While there are plenty of metrics and analytical tools provided by Google, it does not reveal its inner workings in their entirety, in part because they are always changing and also to protect its flagship service. However, some in the SEO services industry have been clamouring for a universal quality score which could indicate which sites are well optimised and which need some work.

Google's Matt Cutts regularly posts video sessions to YouTube in which he answers questions posed by webmasters and others involved in the business of running sites. He recently fielded a question on this very topic and attempted to explain the reasons for a lack of an SEO quality calculator in Google's current set-up.

Mr Cutts explained that assigning exact scores to pages and sites could be self-defeating as it would encourage site owners to spend endless amounts of time tweaking sites to fit the prescribed template that Google and its rivals use. He believes that this would ultimately require a lot of guesswork, with sites becoming homogenous and variety, which is the spice of the web, being threatened.

He also said that the sites that would be able to put the most time and resources into this would be based around spam, with legitimate sites struggling to keep up with the relentless black-hat activities and thus finding themselves further down the rankings.

Mr Cutts went on to talk about the difficult role which Google plays in mediating the online marketplace and ensuring that the most relevant sites rise to the top of the rankings while those that are out there to dupe consumers are kept away from search users.

Google takes the point of view that to provide an SEO quality calculator that assigns numerical values to sites and pages based on their levels of optimisation would help unscrupulous site operators more than it would those who are using SEO tactics to promote their honest businesses.
