How to access your PC and Mac files and folders remotely [Softwares]

In this article we would be reviewing some best softwares for Mac and PC that enable you to access files and folders from PC to PC, Mac to Mac, Mac to PC or PC to Mac.

With your work more than ever following you to your home, being able to remotely access your office computer from home and vice verse is blessing in disguise. Remotely being able to access your files saves you the tension of missing important tasks or assignments while on the go without your heavy computers.

The best of this is that many of the tools which enable you this remote access are available for free on cost. Yes, you read it right, you don't even need to spend a dime to use these amazing tools which help you like anything. Of course, some advance features like VPN will only be available with paid upgrades, but for the most basic of tasks, these tools are great.

Here we would be mentioning the softwares we reviewed in the decreasing order of their efficiency, i.e. the software mentioned first is highly recommended and the last one is least recommended, however it does mean that it is a bad utility tool at all and according to your needs it just might be the right tool for you.

TeamViewer

TeamViewer is probably the most used application for the multiple features it offers. Video conference, VoIP, text chat and Remote access are some fine features available even with the free version of TeamViewer which is available for non-commercial purposes only. It is firewall friendly software available for both Mac and Windows PC which uses HTTP port 80 to connect to a remote computer from your host computer. It can be used through its installed version or the memory only version. It just requires an ID and password to enable the connection.

Gbridge

Gbridge is a free to use software that is even better than TeamViewer. It not only allows you to remote control a computer and chat, but also enables you to automatically sync folders, share files and folders. However, it is available only for Windows. It is also a firewall friendly software like TeamViewer and does not require any configuration settings from your side. It uses Gmail account for user authentication and to record all the devices of that user. Officially it is supported for Windows 2000 to Windows 7 but works fine even for Windows 8.
Gbridge uses a soft VPN using its own site and is nicely integrated that users can use each other, share files and remote control PCs with multiple users. Yes, it is not one-to-one software like TeamViewer but supports many-to-many connections.

Remote Desktop Connection

Remote Deskop is an inbuilt feature in every Windows PC starting from XP. It supports remote printing too and the only con is that it requires an open port in the firewall to make the connection. It is available for Windows versions till late 2000 and is even available for Mac systems. The Mac version is also free to use. It is the only software we found that supports remote printing except Gbridge and Jump Desktop. It supports a plethora of features in remote connection like redirect USB/serial ports, transfer audio of remote computer, share files and even offers sharing of clipboard.

WinRemotePC

WinRemotePC is a product by WinSoftMagic. This software offers remote desktop control, copying data from clipboard and file transfer. It has a plugin feature which allows you to extend it capabilities by installing the required plugins. This product is available for Windows 2000/XP/2003 Server/Vista/2008. The set up is light for both host and remote systems at just 3 MB. It is very quick with so minimum latency that you can even watch videos on a remote system.

LogMeIn

LogMeIn free edition is a tool we would like to end our article with. It is almost everything you would require with a remote access software. LogMeIn is a browser based utility for both Mac and PC. It is a firewall friendly software but is highly limited in its free version. You get remote access in its free version but for file transfer, remote audio and file printing you need to upgrade to the subscription based service available at a yearly subscription for a reasonable price. You need to create an account at the LogMeIn website from your host computer and then access the remote computer from the list of available computers. It requires ActiveX control plugin in the browser, you will get a pop up for it in the browser when you use this utility so no need to search for the plugin manually. The web connection is secured by 256-bit AES SSL encryption.

Jump Desktop

Jump Desktop is a completely free software with no ads whatsoever. It works for PC, Mac and even Android smartphones. You have two remote access mechanisms here- RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) and VNC (Virtual Network Computing). RDP is Microsoft's native technology for connecting two Windows based systems whereas VNC is a platform independent remote access protocol primarily designed for Linux based systems. If you will be connecting Windows based system then RDP is suggested otherwise go for VNC. This too uses Google account for user identification and keeping a record on your systems. Its features are bluetooth support, remote audio and also remote printing.
