Review of VSDC Free Video Editor from VisualSoftDev

Are you looking for a free video editor? Read this review of VSDC Video Editor, which is a free solution that offers better features than many other free solutions like Windows Movie Maker.

I have been using Windows Movie Maker on my home desktop for making short videos to upload to YouTube or make some video projects for the kids. However, Movie Maker comes with many limitations and does not offer any rich video editing features.

I recently tried a new video editor that offers several advanced features that are not available in most of the free video editors. Let us take a look at some of the key features of VideoSoftDev Free Video Editor.

Major features

I found a few interesting features in this free tool. Let us look into the details.

Built-in DVD burning tool: A professional DVD burning tool will cost you anywhere between $20 to $100 and some professional tools cost even more than that. How about getting it free? The VideoSoftDev Video Editor comes with a free DVD burning tool, which is a bonus along with your free software.

Built-in video converters: The included video converters allow you to convert videos from many standard formats to many other supported formats. Conversion between most of the standard formats like AVI, QuickTime (MP4/M4V, 3GP/2G2, MOV, QT), HDVideo/AVCHD (MTS, M2TS, TS, MOD, TOD), WindowsMedia (WMV, ASF, DVR-MS), DVD/VOB, VCD/SVCD, MPEG/MPG/DAT, Matroska Video (MKV), Real Media Video (RM, RMVB), Flash Video (SWF, FLV), DV, AMV, MTV, NUT, H.264/MPEG-4, DivX, XviD, MJPEG are supported.

Screen recording with drawing facility: Screen recording with drawing is another great feature in the VSDC Video Editor. You can capture the full screen or a part of the screen with voice. While recording, you can draw on the screen using the built-in drawing tools which allows you to mark lines, arrows, ellipse etc. This is a very handy tool if you are making presentations or video reviews.

Screen recording is a very useful feature for bloggers, teachers and other people who like to create short videos recorded from the screen to show demonstrations and presentations for the blogs, class rooms, seminars etc. I have already started using it for many demos and presentations. The ability to add voice and drawings to the recorded screens make the free video editor a really awesome software.

Downloading and installing

The installer is about 27Mb and with a broadband connection, it took less than a minute to complete the downloading. Installation was easy and straight forward with just a few steps in the standard setup wizard. The software was launched at the end of setup.

A small glitch to mention is, when the software was launched, it presented with a small screen as shown below:

This screen is bit confusing because it gives an impressions that we need to either activate or buy the software before we can proceed. However, clicking the "Close" button will do the trick.

Malware, Adware and Advertisements

To be frank, when I install any free software, I am extra careful about malware or adware that are usually included with the software. So, I usually do some extra check for presence of malware after installing. I ran ESET Nod32 Antivirus software after installing VSDC Free Video Editor and it couldn't find any malware or unwanted applications installed along with the free video editor. Also, from my limited use so far, there are no advertisements as well.

Overall review of VSDC Free Video Editor

After using it for a couple of days, I can confidently state that this is one of the best free video editing software you can get currently. Even though some of the premium editing features are missing, if you cannot afford to purchase an expensive professional video editor, VSDC Free Video Editor is the one to go. If you know any other free tools you know that works similar or better, please share your experience below as a response.

When I installed the VSCD Program and tried to run it a pop asked me to 'Close the program down as there was fault opening the program' I installed this on a computer that is never connected to the internet so there is a good chance of no nasty virus programs. As I do not install any programs that are not checked first. So it is NO GOOD as far as I can see. I have tried this program months ago and got the same Fault message. Are there plug in small files that I need to have to run VSCD? I am 79yo but as an ex Electronic Broadcast engineer I can work out pretty much around programs but with this one there is no clue.

Thank for any help it would be interesting to get it going

I have tried the program for three days. I'm disappointed with the Text Editor. When I try to make a text to appear, and not using Background with one solid color, the font letters are not sharp. It's worse when using cursive fonts.

I would like to use an image as a background, then put text on it. I tried to Create Snapshot, that messed up the font size (smaller). I wonder if I need to adjust the pc or the program?

The installer comes loaded with adware, whether you download it directly from the manufacturer or not. Maybe at the time you reviewed it, the product had not been infected, but it is now. Cannot recommend this to anyone.
