How to lock or hide hard drives of a computer

Why to lock/hide hard drive?


Currently in any organizations or at home/office, we find more than one accounts created for different types of users. There can be an 'administrator account' or many 'guest accounts'. There are chances that by vising guest account, one can steal or change the data of hard drives which can be easily accessible from guest account also. So, in order to prevent the access to drive of hard disk from guest account user, an administrator can either lock the drive/drives or hide them. By doing so one can use the guest account but cannot access the data stored in hard drive.

How to lock/hide hard drive?


Follow this step by step information/procedure to lock or hide hard drives of any Windows operating systems.

How to lock or hide hard drives of a computer?

Step:1 Press Windows+R to get Run menu active.
Step:2 Enter gpedit.msc command and press enter. This will open new window called 'Local Group Policy Editor'. This window contain two sections. Computer configuration and User configuration. Each option has three sub sections like 'Software settings','Windows Settings' and 'Administrative Templates'.
Step:3 Now select User configuration and it will show three sub sections i.e. 'Software settings','Windows Settings' and 'Administrative Templates'.
Step:4 Click on Administrative templates.
Step:5 Administrative templates contains eight different sub sections. i.e 'Control Panel', 'Desktop', 'Network', 'Shared folders', 'Start menu and task bar', 'System', 'Windows components' and 'All settings'.
Step:5 Click on Windows Components. This will show many different options to change settings.
Step:6 Click on 'Windows Explorer'.

Now you reached to a place where you can control or change the setting related to access of hard drive. You have now two options by which hard disk can be secured.
  1. Hide the specified drives

  2. Prevent the access to specified drives.


To hide the specified drives of your My Computer hard disk, you can follow this path:

User configuration -> Administrative templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Explorer -> Finally double click on 'Hide these specified drives in My Computer'. This will open new window. Which has three options.
1. Not configured
2. Enabled
3. Disabled

Now to hide the specified drive number/letter, click on Enabled and this will make hard drive selection tab active. In which one can choose either one, two or all hard drive to hide. Later you can select Disabled to unhide the drives.(See the figure)

How to lock or hide hard drives of a computer?

To lock the specified drives of your My Computer hard disk, you can follow this path:

User configuration -> Administrative templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Explorer -> Finally double click on 'Prevent access to drives to My Computer'. This will open new window. Which has three options.

1. Not configured
2. Enabled
3. Disabled

Now to lock the specified drive number/letter, click on Enabled and this will make hard drive selection tab active. In which one can choose either one, two or all hard drive to lock. Later you can disable the drives to access the drives (See the figure)

How to lock or hide hard drives of a computer?

Now, as you already did your setting for locking or hiding the drive, you must restart the computer to take effects into action. Here one thing one needs to remember that if you only hide the drives and did not lock them, they can also be accessible from 'Run' or 'Command Prompt'. But if you lock drives, this option will not work.

Thus, in a nutshell, one can prevent access to the drives which might be accessible to guest accounts. So, sharing account now be more secured once you hide or lock the drives.

Hello,

The first step is effective but I face some other problem. The drive numbers are limited up to D. I have 4 Drives created in hard disk and I want to hide only E Drive. But those two drives are not showing up in the drop-down menu to choose.

How to make this system show all the drive that I have in My Computer?
