A personal folder or a PST folder is a folder which stores items from to create space in the mailbox. This folder is usually saved on either network drive or on hard drive in user's computer. Network drive is saved on the where back up always runs so it's advisable to save a PST folder on it. If a user saves it on hard drive, the data will be lost if system format is done.

Coming back to our article, the PST is scanned when outlook prompts it to be scanned soon after it's launched and also when a PST doesn't work and needs scanning. Scanning is time consuming procedure. So, please keep in mind about the factor in case you have other tasks to be completed in outlook.
Please use the following steps if you see the message, Scanning PST when you launch Outlook.
Step 1 - Check the size of the PST, if you see the PST is over the size limit i.e. more than 1.5 GB.
Step 2 - Search for scanpst.exe by clicking on start -> search by typing pst.exe
Step 3 - Browse for the Corrupt PST file > click start. Please see the screen shot.
Step 4 - Click on Repair. Please see the screen shot.
Step 5 - Create a new PST to move the emails from the over size limit PST, to reduce the size of the PST.
Step 6 - How to create a new PST, Go to Control Panel, Click on Mail.
Step 7 - A new window opens, click on Data Files. Please see the screen shot.
Step 8 - Click on Add and Ok to name and create a new PST. Please see the screen shot.
Step 9 - Now move the emails from the Scanned PST to the new PST in the outlook.
Note: This issue is categorized under complex issues as it requires a lot of time and understanding to perform the task. Usually, tier 1 support does not handle it until they are very sure of it. This article will help tier 1 support group to save their metrics.
