A back link is a text which has been hyper linked to point to a specific website. These links are used in the same way as < href="some URL">. You are thinking in the right direction. However I must let you know the purpose of back links is not only to take you to another target page, but also it helps increase the page rank of that particular website.You must have heard about "link exchanger" or "referral programs" specially on blogs or you must have definitely seen people deliberately leaving behind their blogs name on comments.This is done to increase their back links! Backlink is just an incoming link to your site from another site. For example, if you read any article or some information and you like it from other site then you can give its URL to your site with short summary driving traffic and more detail on the other website. It may not or may happen vice vers like link exchanges. However, both will be getting benefitted from the backlink. Backlink helps for traffic and page rank too.
