Another war by Google now with Facebook.
Google Plus, the search engine giant's social network, has now crossed the 40 million user mark. It is to be seen in this context that eventhough its initial launching was in June 2011, it had opened its door only two month back.
Now consider the case of Facebook., one of the world's largest social networks, which was founded in 2004, it took three years to gather a user base of 25 million - it achieved a user base of only 50 million users in October 2007. But you have also to think the respective periods of time when these competing social media services were developed .The concept of social media was just in its infancy as compared to 2011, when it has grown to become an almost integral segment of the online world. But still we have to appreciate the achievement of Google which is certainly the fastest social net work to attract 25 million unique visitors, in less than a month since it initial launch.
But Facebook has also now done an extreme makeover of its user profiles, redesigning the interface so that it's easy to surface not only recent updates but also years-old information, Facebook has also upgraded its application platform so that gaming and media companies can more tightly integrate their content and services with the social networking site. The new profile design is called TIMELINE. It features a variety of interface and functionality changes geared toward letting users tell the full story of their lives, instead of just their most recent activities, according to the company.
The Timeline will still feature recent updates, but it will also summarize past events and feature the most important ones in a single page people can scroll through. The Timeline will also provide new interface controls to filter posts according to different criteria, such as seeing only photos or calling up a specific year.
People will also be able to fill in the Timeline retroactively with old photos and place them in the appropriate chronological spot. Current privacy settings and controls will apply to the Timeline interface so people can establish who can see what.
Timeline will also feature a new Ticker section, where Facebook will put automatically generated notifications of user actions, such as when people "like" a webpage or establish new friend connections.Those automated notifications will grow in scope, so that people can share what music they're listening to, what movies or TV shows they're watching and what news articles they're reading. In various ways, Facebook members will be able to notify their friends automatically about activities on those four and dozens of other media sites, and their friends will be able to call up the songs, TV shows and other content right from within the Facebook interface.
It is to be seen as to whether there will be a clear winner in the social media arena, as on the one side you have Google Plus, with its rapidly expanding user base, and on the other hand, there is Facebook, which already has a massive 800 million user base worldwide. And more importantly, it will depend upon which of these two companies can push forward their respective advantages to outdo the other.

Good comparisons between Google+ and Facebook, Google+ is taking its place within no time because it has the ability for the same but it cant replace Facebook in social media, but it helps all those who are engaged with Google apps and G-mail. Both serves different purposes and both will make the world history in coming days. But any way your article is very good and it helps the new user to understand what is Google + and Facebook if they read it.

Google tried there level best to gain there profit and there support. So they started google+. But it will not help them also. But day by day facebook has 1000 of members are sign up. I think facebook is an addiction for people. Orkut and google tried level best to became top. But they fail. Facebook has became a social communication media now.

I think in place of launching Google+, they should have updated orkut to google+ , which would have worked much better.

Yes Mridul, your idea is great, if google tried to upgrade the Orkut then facebook will not get a position like leading social networking site. But google+ is just only started jets watch and what will happen. Because facebook released in 2004,but it took time to get the position of the leading social networking. Sometimes 1or 2 years google+ may took the position of the facebook. There is a possibility for google+ also.

Impressive comparison between Facebook and Google Plus One. Facebook is very popular now a days and its a rich social networking site in terms users. Directly the quantity and quality of users are the key success of any social networking site. Hence if users are just joining any sites and after that no conversation/communication will reduce interest. For Google Plus One (G+), its very hard to engaged user for long time or extend the visit time of user. G+ also introduced games and aaps like Facebook but very few people are using it.
