Let me tell you that gmail supports video chat. Even i have used it to chat with friends, like that other email service provider like yahoo also support video chat. New good news is that Facebook has also launched video chat feature powered by Skype.

Video chatting is a very good feature which attracts the users as video calling cost higher, hence people tends to have video chat with and the above sites as you have mentioned.
