If you are talking professional and you want your conversation to result in fruitful effects, it is always better to chat to your team members one after another. If you want to convey a common message for all, you can always use email, but chatting is always used for increasing interpersonal knowledge sharing.
In that perspective, you may miss out important information from both directions, if you have opened up too many windows at a time.
Moreover, it is possible that you type wrong message to a wrong member which you wanted the last thing to happen.

You can automate Gtalk replies using third party apps. For example if your are out from your desk you can mention that in your automatic replies. It can be done using Gtalk Autoreply app.
Always minimize the chat box. If not, you won't know whether you have received new chat or not. The chat box turns orange color when you receive a new chat if it is minimized. You can also use headset if it is allowed in your organization.
