Industry expects system administrators to know a broad range of tasks that include maintaining, upgrading or sometimes installing servers of an organization. Even administrators are expected to know programming knowledge as sometimes they are asked to write small scripts to carry out important tasks.
Several studies indicate that number of jobs available in this field is expected to rise by 27% for every 10 years. After doing some certifications like RHCE(Red Hat Certified Engineer), you can settle as a systems administrator. Even at times when IT boom falls, administrators are the last ones to leave organization.
In countries like India, where organizations are adopting open source softwares there is a great demand for administrators, their jobs range from desktop support and server support to network management and sometimes IT security management. They expect administrators should have knowledge on cyber security and network designing.
With lot of e-Commerce portals like Flipkart, Snapdeal, Myntra, Jabong bubbling up in India, the demand for Linux administrators is huge. The reason behind this is most of them use LAMP(Linux, Apache, MySql, PHP) stack where everything is open source and free of cost. IT Managers look for people who have good analytical and problem solving skills.
To enter into this field, a fresher should be at least RHCE certified and should have basic concepts in OS, storage and networking. Certifications in cloud and storage would be an added advantage.
As we all know, Cisco owns a large part of the market share in manufacturing networking equipment. They work on everything that is related to networking like firewalls, switches and routers.
Cisco has recently made some significant changes to its certification structure. Traditionally, the CCNP certification was solely for those who had passed the CCNA and a set of routing and switching exams.
So keep a wide eye while preparing for a Cisco certification.
By now you might be knowing that CCNP requires re-certification every three years. If one fails to pass through next intermediate level before these 3 years, they lose their certification status and have to start race from beginning. Because of this condition, professionals update them with current trends and therefore they will get higher salaries.
Here I mentioned the various certifications from entry level to architect level provided by Cisco.
CCENT - Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician
CCNA - Cisco Certified Network Associate
CCNP - Cisco Certified Network Professional
CCIE - Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert
CCA - Cisco Certified Architect
Though the share of Linux distributions is less compared to Windows in operating systems area, people are more drifted to this field because of many factors like it gives freedom, we can work on open source stuff. But there are limitations to this also. More over, there is less support when we come up with some show stoppers. Because of this reason, number of people who take RHCE is always less compared to people who take Microsoft certified programs.
But this turned to be positive factor to those who take Redhat certifications because of their specialized knowledge in that particular area.
When it comes to salary, demand for Cisco certified professionals is more due to their market share. The average salary for top most level is $90000. Even though there are less number of Redhat certified professionals, the average salary for top most level is $94000.
