If you are not interested in the ones which are available for free and want to have a customized one, then you have to have the idea of which platform do you want the website to be developed on. Example would be ASP, Microsoft FrontPage etc. The cost of hosting, domain, storage option, server and designing will get added to it. There will be many other charges too like uploading the data, data processing, content management system and so on.
I know a simple website where you can purchase books online. The link is here: www.manchipustakam.in
If this type of a website is enough, which has only the bare necessary features, it can cost you around 15000-20000. More features will cost more.

Developing an e-commerce website for online shopping involves following steps:
- Purchasing a domain for 1 or 2 years.
- Purchasing a hosting service for 1, 2 or 3 years.
- Building an e-catalogue of products for your online shopping website.
- Getting your website built.
- Social Media Marketing of your website (with so much competition in the e-commerce space).
- Having a new payment gateway (if you want more payment options than just COD[Cash On Delivery]).
Each of the above step involves money spending and so you need to be prepared to spend roughly Rs.90,000 to Rs.1,20,000 for building a good e-commerce website. Additionally, you will also have to bear the cost of delivery and packaging, which turns out to be a serious problem for many e-commerce start-ups.
Now, you have two options to build an e-commerce website:
- Assign the task to a professional web development company or may be a team of talented web development freelancers.
- Get your site built from reputed teams like 'Kartrocket' or 'Shopify'. Such websites send their team members to collect requirements from you and build the entire website along with payment gateway (which is generally very expensive) for you. They also provide you with shipping and delivery services as they ties with renowned courier services all over India. So, with them, you could easily reach out to major cities of India. The best part about building sites from them is that they charge on a monthly basis (depending on the plan you choose) and so you don't have to pay a huge amount upfront. You can utilize the money on marketing and business rather than website.

There are two different ways to determine the cost of developing an online shopping site. For example, if you are a website developer then obviously you will save a lot of money though you have to invest for domain purchasing, web-hosting and promotion (except web designing and managing it from time to time) etc.
If you have no skills on web designing or programming or coding then you have to depend on others (web designer and website company) for all until you get satisfied your online shopping sites is of worth and productivity. Here, you have to spend from Rs 10,000 to about Rs 1,00,000 at least based on your requirements and satisfaction. By the time if you get enough benefits from this site then you will be able to continue it by paying for domain renewal, web-hosting and web re-designing, etc.
If you are willing to get additional benefits like attractive traffic or visitors to your site then you have to temporarily assign this task to the web designing company or SEO expert to handle the data or content effectively.

I read a book 'How I Braved Anu Aunty'. In this book the author is an entrepreneur and running e-commerce site (Alma Mater). He mentioned that it took 2 lakhs to build his e-commerce site. The book is a story of his real life. He is running the Alma Mater website which sells clothes. I thought e-commerce site can be built easily. But it seems it takes minimum 6 months to develop complete e-commerce site. There are separate tools for developing e-commerce sites. He mentioned the tool names but I forgot them. You will be dealing with money and you should be very careful while doing so. That website was developed by a Bangalore based start-up company.
As you will deal with online transactions, you need to have a transaction gateway. You might know about this gateway if you have done online recharge or any other transaction. Billdesk is one of the gateways I used to see when I recharged Tata Docomo. So you need to pay commission to the gateway for every transaction. It may be 5 to 10 percent of the total transaction.
Apart from this, you need to make product delivery. For product delivery you need to sign up with parcel service like BlueDart, DHL etc. They charge commission for every delivery they make.
If you plan to start an e-commerce site then read this book. You will find some useful information about e-commerce. It is a small book and you can complete within a day.

Earlier the cost to open any website was high. That is not the case anymore. You get cheaper hosting and domains these days. You just have to start with better rates from the services.
For example with Godaddy, you get cheaper domains and with hosts like Hostgaor you can get cheaper hosting for single domain. All this price goes under 2000Rs. Also if you plan on using scripts like WordPress, Magento, OpenCart then that is free too. So you don't end up spending too much money. You only spend on essentials and this way you get things going.
If you have a money for one years hosting apprx: 2500 and 500 Rs for domain, then you are set. You don't have to waste money on other expensive options.
