How can I use a television as a computer monitor screen?

Date: 31 May 2014   Posted By: Pravin S Chavre     Group: Computers & Smart Devices    Category: Internet, Networking and Connectivity

I have a keyboard, mouse and LED TV at my home.

I don't want to buy a Laptop or a CPU whose cost is above Rs. 10,000/-.

So please suggest me a device which can act as a CPU and complete the PC system. Can it be done?

If yes, please suggest the devices whose cost would be below Rs. 10,000/-.

The idea is not bad. But I do not think this will work! In order to have computing, you need CPU with mother board. You can consult PC repairing shop where they will provide you some sort of help as they are physically working on the system. If you will get second hand CPU which fits into your budget, you can buy it too and you can complete your PC.

If your LED Television has VGA port, then it can act as a monitor for your computer. Also you have mouse, keyboard etc. So, you don't need to buy anything extra.

But, CPU is a must and to reduce the budget you can simply go for "Assembling", by buying parts one by one according to your needs and budget.

Just buy a CPU case, Processor, Hard Disk, RAM, MotherBoard, CD/DVD Drive. That's it. Your computer is now ready for assembling and after assembling you can use your television VGA port for your brand new PC as the monitor.

(Note:Even though you are assembling it, you can't get a CPU with good performance with Rs. 10,000/- Budget.)

Here are the Prices of various parts for CPU Assembling:
  • Processor: Intel Dual Core: Rs. 3000 - Rs. 3500.

  • Hard Disk: 320GB HDD: Rs. 2500 - Rs. 3000.

  • RAM: 2GB Random Access Memory- Rs. 2000 - Rs. 2500.

  • Motherboard: Asus Motherboards starting at Rs. 2300.

  • DVD Drive: Starting from Rs. 1000.

I'm sorry, but you can't make a CPU with a budget of Rs. 10,000 which can give you good performance. Instead you can buy a second hand CPU for your PC but, it is not recommended.

Actually I have a personal experience of doing this the other way round, that is we are using a computer monitor as a television with the help of a tuner card. From the common sense logic, it should work in your case too. that will cost you around 500 to 1000. But as I said, it is a common sense approach, but you can ask the shopkeeper and try it out.

I think Chromecast is a device you are looking. For using Chromecast your TV must have two USB port, one for power supply for Chromecast and other for connecting it to the TV. You should also have a Android phone or CPU installed with Windows OS and Wi-Fi connection to use Chromecast. Actually it is a streaming device which can stream YouTube videos, Netflix and not more. Chromecast cost you Rs.3500 in Amazon. This will be a solution if you just need to watch videos.

If you want to experience full computing with low cost then go for Raspberry Pi. It is compact credit card sized hardware which can run light version of Linux. It is developed for students who can't afford money. So use this Raspberry Pi chip you need to have a TV with HDMI port. You can use HDMI connector to connect it to TV. Cost of Raspberry Pi is Rs.3500 and is available in Ebay India.

So if you don't have CPU then it is wise to choose Raspberry Pi and if you have CPU with you then go for Chromecast.
