Yes, Google changed its Maps UI and I am comfortable with the new look and coming to performance, its somewhat. You are right that it freezes when I go close enough in 360 degrees street view.

You can access the older classic version of Maps by following these steps.

    1. Go to Google Maps
    2. Search for a question mark symbol on right bottom corner.
    3. Click it and you'll find Return to Classic Google Maps
    4. Give feedback or just click return again

You will be now redirected to the old look of Google Maps. Now a small pop up bar asks you -]

"You have switched back to classic Google Maps for this session. Remember this choice for next time? Yes Dismiss"

If you want to see the classic version for the next time, click 'yes' and proceed. Hope this information helps you.
