KitKat is one of the best Android Version Update by the Google.
The major difference between KitKat and Jelly bean is that KitKat is optimized for its best performance in Low end devices having 256MB of RAM and 1GHz processor.
The difference can be seen if KitKat and Jelly bean are installed in same model of mobile with same hardware, the performance of KitKat will much better than the Jelly bean as User Interface much smoother, Very low RAM used by System means more than 45% of free RAM that can be used play some Games also better multitasking performance than the jelly bean installed device.

Many features are added in the recent version of Android 4.x codenamed as "KitKat". I categorized them into two groups based on the view of a user and a developer.

Some of the User level features added are
    1. Performance improvements
    2. Enhanced notification access
    3. Screen Recording
    4. Several security enhancements

Some of the Developer level features added are
    1. Wireless Printing Capability
    2. Native Infrared Blaster API was introduced
    3. NFC Host Card Emulation for wireless payments
    4. New Storage Access Framework was introduced
    5. Audio Tunneling, Audio Monitoring and Loudness Enhancer were added

They fixed some of the severe issues like OpenSSL Vulnerability, man-in-the-middle attack and Heartbleed Virus in the recent kitkat version 4.4.4. Many smart phones are coming with Android Kitkat OS and you can easily upgrade your older versions of android to this recent one.

They are also looking to come up with less battery consumption for apps and more on speed improvement for the next coming Android version L(Lollipop).
