What is a Blu-ray Disc? How it is better than a CD or DVD player?

Want to know the information about Blue ray disc? How does blue ray disc differ from conventional CD or DVD? What is the reason why it is still not popular? Find the answers to your queries here.

    Dear friends,

Well, we have been talking about the Blu-ray Disc for so many days now. But it did not get market penetration as other CD or DVD players. Its quite strange that a new technology did not get a red carpet welcome from the customers for various reasons.

My questions are: What is a Blu-ray Disc? How it is better than a CD or DVD player?

Please explain me. Thank you in advance.

Blu-ray disc or BD is also an optical disc storage medium like other CD or DVDs storage drives with same dimension and thickness but having more storage capability when compared to others. A Blue-ray disc is a re-writable drives that may consists of multiple - single, double, triple or quadruple layers each with 25GB of storage capacity.

It is better than a CD or DVDs in respect to its storage capacity. Unlike red laser technology to read/write plus longer wavelength of conventional CD & DVD drives, the Blu-ray disc uses blue laser and shorter wavelength. The blue laser technology for reading/writing information on disk is better than red laser as it stores information with greater density.

A Blu-ray Disc is highly efficient for storing video and multimedia formats. A Blu-ray player also seems to be better than a CD or DVD player because its blu-ray allows storing video and multimedia formats with greater definition than DVD.

Secondly, you can play any CD or DVD on a Blu-ray player, but you can't play a Blu-ray on traditional CD/DVD players.

Blue-ray disc has more than 5 times storage capacity than DVD. It can hold 25 GB on single layer disc and 50GB on double layer disc ie. both sided disc.
Blue-ray disc was developed to recording, rewriting and playback high definition video as well as store large amount of data.
DVD,DVD-R,DVD-WR and DVD RAM use red laser to read and write data where as blue ray disc use blue-violet laser hence name is blue-ray
Blue-ray disc has shorter wavelength than red laser so laser can spot exactly and data can be written without leaving space so data store in a less space.
That's why it is possible to fit more data than same size of DVD/CD in a blue-ray disc

It is the name of a new optical disc format that is rapidly replacing DVD. It is developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of HD video, as well as storing large amount of data. The format of the Blu-ray offers more than 5 times in its storage capacity of traditional DVD's. It holds upto 25GB on a single layer disc and 50GB on a dual layer disc. It utilizes a blue-violet laser to read and write data. The name is a combination of Blue which is a blue-violet laser and Ray which is an optical ray. The spelling of Blu-ray is not a mistake; the character 'e' was intentionally left out so the term could be registered as a trademark.

It plans to provide a wide range of formats including ROM/R/RW. The Blu-ray having the following format specifications like BD-ROM, BD-R and BD-RE. To ensure that the Blu-ray disc format is easily extendable this also includes support for multi-layer discs. It allows the storage capacity to be increased to 100GB to 200GB in the future simply by adding more layers to the discs.

In some of the cases Blu-ray is fairly similar to DVD. It brings three major improvements over DVD. It has better image quality, better sound quality and more special features. All three are made possibly by the larger storage capacity of Blu-ray, which is capable of storing 50GB of information on a single Blu-ray disc. It is compared with DVDs which can hold about 8GB.
